Turning the idea of zero carbon into a reality

Prime Range Meats processing plant

Ahikā helps small and large businesses understand their energy use and carbon emissions so that they can make informed decisions about their business.

In 2020, Ahikā developed a zero carbon strategy for Prime Range Meats in Invercargill. First, we developed a carbon profile for their entire operations and found that ‘scope 1 emissions’ (which are readily controllable) accounted for nearly 70% of the company’s emissions.

After conducting a detailed thermal energy assessment of the entire boiler and steam network system, we identified how 50% of energy use could be saved through increasing energy efficiency and reducing waste, including boiler optimisation, steam network improvements, heat recovery and hot water controls.

We secured funding from the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry (GIDI) Fund for the implementation of upgrades.

Ahikā continues to work with our client to project manage the improvements. The next step is to consider options for fuel switching from coal to biomass, and planting a carbon forest.

Ahikā has the expertise in conversion of coal boilers, fuel supply options, and carbon management to see these projects through. We work alongside clients to ensure their expertise is incorporated, and to achieve their goals. In this case, Prime Range Meats has a vision to stop using coal for thermal energy.
