Rhys is a committed environmental advocate, community builder and strategic thinker. He combines a strong desire to contribute to a more sustainable future with a passion for working with people from all walks of life, ultimately creating and delivering innovative projects which enhance the environment and community wellbeing.  

Rhys is the Managing Director of Whirika, and truly enjoys the diversity, energy and fun of the team. 

Rhys has been working in conservation, forest restoration, land use and environmental planning for 25 years. His knowledge and skills in conservation management, project management, engagement, and developing effective partnerships combine to create projects which have positive impact.  

His combination of vision and perspective, expertise in stakeholder engagement, and strategic management, means he can develop concepts into successful and sustained projects. He led the development of the Halo Project and Predator Free Dunedin and continues in management roles in both of these projects today. 

Rhys builds lasting relationships with his clients, where innovations to meet long-term goals are embraced.   

Rhys works closely with clients such as Watercare Services on the Hunua Forest restoration, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Hokonui Rūnaka, various Councils, and a number of private landowners and NGOs. The diversity of client needs, and the wonderful characters that Rhys works with, means he is exposed to a range of values and beliefs and rich context for the advice he provides.
