At Ahika, the natural environment is central in our thinking. Natural spaces are fundamental to our way of life, providing immeasurable social, economic, and cultural benefits to local communities.
We work with landowners, local governments, NGOs and community groups to meet the challenges of managing the natural environment for its many benefits – from food and timber production, to wildlife habitat, to carbon storage and clean water – while ensuring its vitality and sustainability .
Food is at the heart of every community, and food production underpins New Zealand’s economy. We have been exploring our food economy for a few years now, with a major focus on strengthening our local food system.
The system of producing, processing and distributing food creates jobs, provides opportunities, drives innovation and productivity, facilitates creativity, and bridges the gap between rural and urban.
We have been exploring new regional food system models that are capable of building community resilience. The work we do in this sector tends to be research focused but always grounded by community input. Both Rhys and Niki are quickly becoming our food system boffins having led and managed a variety of food related research project.
We enjoy working closely with businesses that want to gain a competitive edge and make positive changes within their companies. We focus on building “resilience”, or strengthening of businesses to be able to weather some of the unknown storms of the future, as well as exploring opportunities for businesses to gain competitive advantages from making sustainability decisions. We work with staff within workplaces to ensure they are on the journey, as well as providing the technical assistance and expertise to help them identify opportunities.
Our community and our environment are at the heart of what we do! This means that we work hard to ensure local involvement in projects where it is fundamental that we understand our communities’ wants and needs. Listening and capturing concerns and constructive aspirations for creating positive futures are our focus, whether that is within a research and analysis project, a planning and strategy project or where we offer guidance and advise.
